Sunday 20th September - Windsurf *** - The Dip at Felixstowe – sunny and
warm.
Fin – 24.57 knot max, 21.41 knot ave ., 13.25 knot hour, 15.80 knot mile,
25.12 km ., 12.75 knot alpha.
F2 282 Ride with Tushingham Lightning 7m and 38 fin.
Woke up knackered from four days of solid NE winds with wall to wall
sunshine and was hoping for a day off as our son Rob, with partner Hannah
and the wonderful Grandson Arlo are sadly heading for home today but the
wind continues to blow and Rob was keen to have one last kite as he does
not have much opportunity at home in Surrey:) So after breakfast I hitch
the trailer and Rob and I head to The Dip even though we have missed the
best as it is about half tide with wind and tide together so not a great
combination but we had no choice. I dropped Rob at the cliff top car park
with six kiters out and headed the short distance back to our parking spot
with youngster Ed Swain about to head out with 5.7 with the sea sparkling
diamonds bathed in warm sunshine and actually looking good:) Again I
quickly rigged my 7m with the 115 again, shortie on I headed out going
broad for a fast run being wary not to go too far downwind so beat up and
gybed by the red and white bouy in a big sea again! I had just over an hour
mainly by myself as Ed didn’t stay out long, I think he was a little
underpowered and sadly work called. As soon as Rob launched the other
kiters called it a day so just the two off us:) I tried to beat up to him
at kite beach by the golf course but was a little underpowered also and
struggled to make against the tide. I had fun entertaining a couple
watching from our launch beach and hardly dropped a gybe inshore, sadly it
was a different story out to sea as it was confused again making finding a
wave to gybe on challenging! Still I enjoyed the quick session and when
Rob’s green kite disappeared I was a little concerned as I couldn’t see
it on the beach so decided to call it a day just in time for Tom Alexander,
who we saw windsurfing at Waldringfield yesterday, to take my pic:) Rob was
safe and sound and walked back to The Dip while I packed up. What a great
few days we have had, that’s 5 consecutive windsurfing with speeds in
excess of 24 knots, the only downside being that NE used to be the best
direction for flat water with a nice rolling swell, but with a change in
the River Deben exit into the sea it has slightly messed that up, still
shouldn’t complain as we get a week of NE a few times a year and end up
the only part of the UK with any wind so you have to make the most of it.
Fantastic weather too, sunny and warm with shorties all the way and
fantastic to see Rob out on the water too:)
Home in time for lunch, then a walk down to the crowded prom for an ice
cream on the pier with the family, watching the waves roll in, the young
gulls on the look out for chips and a huge container ship heading into
Felixstowe. Arlo whizzes along the prom on his balance bike, then we have a
great time sitting on the beach for an hour while Rob and Hannah go for a
swim in the big sea. Sadly, home for them to pack the car and say our
goodbye. Always a sad time as Arlo does not want to go:( So a few tears
were shed but they got away, Arlo was soon asleep and we were relieved when
we got the message they were home safely. Can’t wait to see them all
again very soon, fingers crossed we can avoid a second lockdown although
sadly I think that is coming closer day by day:(
